KYIV, Ukraine — A chemistry student has been killed by exploding bubble gum that tore off half of his face, police said Thursday.

Vladimir Likhonos, a student at a regional branch of the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute, is thought to have accidentally dipped his chewing gum into explosives he was using for his studies, police spokeswoman Elvira Biganova told The Associated Press.

She said the 25-year-old mistook the powder for citric acid, which he often added to prolong the gum’s taste.

He was working on his home computer Saturday night in the town of Konotop when his mother heard the sound of the explosion, according to authorities.

She turned around to find Vladimir, 25, on the floor bleeding.

Likhonos blew off his entire jaw and most of the lower part of his face in Saturday’s accident.

Medical workers who arrived on the scene attempted to treat his injuries but were unable to save him.

“Even some of our seasoned officers, who have seen a thing or two, even they were pretty badly shaken up by what they found,” Biganova said.

On the table where Likhonos had been working police found about 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of the suspected explosive – a powder that resembles citric acid but has yet to be identified, she said.

“Anybody could have mixed them up,” Biganova said.

A bomb squad was dispatched to determine the nature of the substance, which was deemed too volatile to transport, Biganova said.

BROOKLYN — Two female teachers from James Madison High School in Brooklyn are being charged with misconduct after allegedly being caught naked together in a classroom.

French teacher Cindy Mauro, 34, and Spanish teacher, Alini Brito, 30, were discovered by a school janitor who caught the “undressed” instructors allegedly sharing a kiss in the empty classroom at James Madison High School during a Nov. 20 assembly.

Officials say the women, both tenured teachers, were immediately removed from the classroom following the incident and sent to Department of Education disciplinary chambers.

Outraged students created a Facebook page to sound off on the incident involving the two popular teachers.

Sometimes we feel sorry for them, because they look like they don’t have where to live and they don’t have money to eat. Most of them are like that. They are really poor and they are starving. But, you can always see a cheater, who doesn’t want to work and then they are trying to trick people. They look poor and hurt and some people give them money. Then they walk in to the restaurant and order meal. This happened in China. Dying man suddenly miraculously become alive and healthy.

PETA’s Euthanasia Rates Have Critics Fuming, according to AOL News, and rightfully so.

“In 2009, PETA euthanized 2,301 dogs and cats — 97 percent of those brought in — and adopted only eight, according to Virginia state figures. And the rate of these killings has been increasing.”

That’s 2352 animals: 681 dogs, 1620 cats and 51 other companion animals.

A mere eight of them were saved.

Granted, PETA’s main function isn’t to run as an adoption agency, but eight animals? That’s just shameful. Where’s the ethical treatment in that? Was something wrong with them? Terminal illness? Injuries? Behavioral issues? Aggression? Were all of the dogs Pit bulls?

According to Daphna Nachminovitch, vice president of cruelty investigations at PETA, their euthanasia program isn’t any big secret. She also adds that money can’t buy a good home.

Maybe not, but with $34 million in the bank, surely more of an effort could have been made. Maybe by spending less on things like billboards that shame women into giving up meat by calling them whales…because only skinny people care about animals?

“It’s whoring itself out for media coverage,” David Martosko, director of research at the Center for Consumer Freedom, said of PETA. “They’ll do the ridiculous stuff, but they won’t put an ad in the Norfolk press saying, ‘We have puppies and kittens, come adopt one.’”

I shed a tear of confusion over the fact that I just agreed with CCF’s mouthpiece Martosko, the very same man who said that animal abuse is alright, just as long as no one sees it, it’s the undercover investigators that must be stopped. However, on this point, he may just be right.

Even with up to 8 million cats and dogs making their way into shelters, others also disagree and are looking to the No Kill movement as an answer. (Check out Sharon Seltzer’s post Is Pet Overpopulation Really Killing Our Cats and Dogs?)

PETA may make a lot of money, use shock value and sex as a means of getting a message across, but they haven’t changed the dialogue about animal cruelty or a compassionate and healthy lifestyle in a real way. Instead, they make everyone else who cares about the cause and thinks that sentient beings should be treated with kindness and respect while being allowed to live free of exploitation look stupid. Which is unfortunate, because it’s a cause worth defending with integrity, logic and education.

They push people away from the message of compassion while offending them at the same time by employing misogynistic tactics that degrade women, which does nothing for animals, insulting everyone’s intelligence and flushing any credible message and argument down the drain rather than using rational thoughts or asking people to put on their critical thinking caps and ponder why pigs and cows are so different from dogs and cats, which is truly sad, mostly for the animals they’re claiming to help.

The incident occurred two weeks ago at the Cinemark 22 theater, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The theater was packed for a 9 p.m. Saturday screening of the Martin Scorsese film when the moviegoer complained about a woman near him using a cellphone.

The woman and two men with her left the theater. But sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said two men returned a few minutes later and stabbed the victim.

As information earlier, old Sony PS3 consoles cannot log into the PSN network and in addition offline game play is also affected.

Sony reports on the Playstation Blog, “The problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in old (fat) PS3 systems”; however all PS3 users around the world are annoyed of this newest error code 8001050F.

A devoted PS3 player John Morgan said “This is the worst Playstation 3 error that I’ve encountered so far, and still it has no fix from Sony for almost 24 hours now”.

There are temporary PS3 bug fix guide available in the web but it will just waste your time; to be straightforward at present there’s no fix for error code 8001050F.

New Japan Airlines (JAL) uniforms have long been in demand in the local sex industry for customers keen on role-playing fantasies, while rare specimens that have actually been worn are hugely sought after by fetishists and are worth their weight in gold.

Countless shops will sell a very credible imitation for a few thousand yen, but the real thing can fetch a fortune. Historically, says Yu Teramoto, the owner of a specialist costumier in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, real JAL outfits have been virtually impossible for buyers to lay their hands on. However, the post-bankruptcy prospect of huge layoffs at JAL — especially among uniform-wearing air-crew — raises the prospect that former staff will attempt to sell their outfits for a profit.

“It is hard to say but it is at moments of confusion and anger like this that the black market for uniforms should do well,” he said.

According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools’ administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins’s child was disciplined for “improper behavior in his home” and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence. The suit is a class action, brought on behalf of all students issued with these machines.

If true, these allegations are about as creepy as they come. I don’t know about you, but I often have the laptop in the room while I’m getting dressed, having private discussions with my family, and so on. The idea that a school district would not only spy on its students’ clickstreams and emails (bad enough), but also use these machines as AV bugs is purely horrifying.

Schools are in an absolute panic about kids divulging too much online, worried about pedos and marketers and embarrassing photos that will haunt you when you run for office or apply for a job in 10 years. They tell kids to treat their personal details as though they were precious.

But when schools take that personal information, indiscriminately invading privacy (and, of course, punishing students who use proxies and other privacy tools to avoid official surveillance), they send a much more powerful message: your privacy is worthless and you shouldn’t try to protect it.

Ever since the tragic incident at SeaWorld on Thursday, the top Google search term has invariably been “killer whale kills trainer footage” — meaning that many Internet surfers have been keen on getting a morbid glimpse of Brancheau’s death. Hackers have lunged at this surge in attention, in much the same way that they did following Nodar Kumaritashvili’s fatal luge accident at the Winter Olympics.

He spent two years in prison for the crimes. Six years later, he has his license back and isn’t required to tell his patients about his sketchy past and his status as a registered sex offender.

But thank goodness his probation bans him from buying porn, consuming alcohol, or using the Internet without permission! What a relief. Unfortunately he will still be touching patients and creeping us out.
